iDEM: Innovative and Inclusive Democratic Spaces for Deliberation and Participation

Welcome to our newsletter

We're a Horizon Europe project developing AI tools to make information more accessible for everyone. iDEM language tools aim to support people with disabilities, older people and migrants in democratic processes by addressing the language barriers which present an obstacle to their participation.

iDEM started in January 2024, and we have been actively developing and sharing our project since. Find all our updates in this newsletter!

International Day for Universal Access to Information

The iDEM project is based on the premise of Universal Access to Information. People facing language barriers are often excluded from deliberative and participatory processes because the information they need to understand in order to participate is too complex.

People experiencing language barriers include a wide range of social groups. Among them we can find people with intellectual disabilities or cognitive difficulties; older people; migrants or refugees; or people with limited literacy.

Citizen participation and deliberation are vital parts of our democratic system. In the European Union there are a number of participatory processes at local, national and international levels which can have real-life impact through policies. These processes are only accessible when information has no barriers, otherwise many are excluded from participating in democratic exercises.

Information must be accessible for deliberation to be fair and inclusive. This is why iDEM is working to develop the prototype of an App that simplifies information and makes it more accessible.

iDEM expert

iDEM wants to take accessibility of information one step further. Along with the development of the iDEM App prototype, the iDEM partners have developed the iDEM Expert. This new interactive support tool is designed to help you understand and engage with democratic processes, as well as the iDEM services.

Interested in our research results?

iAs a Horizon Europe project, we are constantly developing new research to send to the European Commission. We call these ‘deliverables' and most of them are public and open access. This way, you can keep up with what we are doing, what we have found out about language barriers and some information about how we are developing the iDEM App prototype and the iDEM Expert.

Our research results are now publicly available in our website.

More iDEM interviews!

Since our last Newsletter, we have three new interviews to share with you.
