iDEM: Innovative and Inclusive Democratic Spaces for Deliberation and Participation

Welcome to our newsletter

We're a Horizon Europe project developing AI tools to make information more accessible for everyone. iDEM language tools aim to support people with disabilities, older people and migrants in democratic processes by addressing the language barriers which present an obstacle to their participation.

iDEM started in January 2024, and we have been actively developing and sharing our project since. Find all our updates in this newsletter!

First version of the iDEM App

We’re excited to announce the launch of the iDEM App V1.0 — a tool designed to make democratic participation more inclusive. This innovative app helps users navigate complex political and policy texts, empowering everyone to take part in democratic dialogue, regardless of language or literacy challenges.

Currently, the app is available exclusively to Approved Users participating in pilot programs in Madrid (Las Rozas), Bologna, and Barcelona. These real-world trials are key to refining the app to meet the needs of its users, ahead of its full public release in 2026.

Partner meeting in Leeds

The University of Leeds hosted us on the 8th and 9th of May for a face-to-face meeting. We discussed the project’s progress and its next steps. We also took part in seminars and workshops held by our partners regarding ethics for use cases, Human Language Technology and Natural Language Processing.

Our first official project review

iDEM went through its first project review under the European Research Executive Agency (REA), on the 17th of June. We had incredibly helpful and positive feedback on the project and the results it has garnered up to this moment. We are very excited to continue working and improving iDEM to ensure more inclusive democratic systems.

More iDEM interviews!

Since our last Newsletter, we have two new interviews to share with you.

Check out our interviews with Alejandro Moledo, EDF’s Deputy Director, and David Bondia, Barcelona’s Ombudsman, to learn more about accessibility and policy in the European Union.
