Pilot is another word for use case.
We want to create new democratic spaces.
Therefore, we create and use 3 pilots in 3 cities.
A pilot is a situation in which people use the tool to do a democratic process.
We work with partner groups that support user rights and help people in need.
For example, people with disabilities, migrants and older people.
Las Rozas is an area near Madrid.
Las Rozas has many participatory processes every year.
But people with disabilities and migrants often cannot join.
They face language barriers.
iDEM will design a pilot for this.
We will create an accessible and inclusive space.
The democratic organisation will suggest important topics.
For example, mobility, pollution, and sustainability.
Citizens can join and discuss these topics.
Some cities and regions in Italy use small public or civic assemblies.
These are meetings where regular people discuss public matters.
iDEM will identify current topics in Italy.
We will use knowledge about these meetings to check how inclusive they are.
We will also test a new democratic space.
This space will help people talk to their representatives.
It will include tools to make it easier to read and write texts.
This will help groups that are less represented.
People with disabilities want to talk about their daily problems.
They live in Barcelona and want to inform the Ombudsman office.
iDEM will create a space for this discussion.
This space will be accessible and inclusive.
It will have digital tools to help understand and create information.
The Ombudsman office will look at these problems.
They will talk about the problems with more people from Barcelona.
They will use iDEM spaces for this discussion.
They will write down conclusions and recommendations.
These will then help make new policies.
In 2024, the Maltese government published 58 public consultations requesting all residents to give their opinion, comments, and feedback on national strategies, policies, or reforms. None of these calls was accessible for persons with intellectual disabilities due to complex language. This makes it impossible to understand the issue under deliberation, to develop an informed opinion, and to exert their democratic right to participate in the decision-making process on matters that directly affect their daily lives. This use case will use the iDEM technology for automatic text simplification to give persons with disabilities access to texts related to democratic processes. Understanding of the simplified texts will be measured with empirical-experimental methods.
