iDEM: Innovative and Inclusive Democratic Spaces for Deliberation and Participation

Welcome to our newsletter

We're a Horizon Europe project developing AI tools to make information more accessible for everyone. iDEM language tools aim to support people with disabilities, older people and migrants in democratic processes by addressing the language barriers which present an obstacle to their participation.

iDEM started in January 2024, and we have been actively developing and sharing our project since. Find all our updates in this newsletter!

This initiative is part of the iDEM project, coordinated by Universitat Pompeu Fabra and involving 12 organisations from seven countries. Las Rozas is one of four pilot locations, alongside Bologna, Barcelona and Malta.

The pilot was led by Fundación Cibervoluntarios and Plena Inclusión Madrid, in collaboration with the City Council and Las Rozas Innova. It tested AI tools designed to simplify complex administrative texts and reduce barriers to participation.

Making information easier to understand is a first step towards a more inclusive democracy.

iDEM’s contribution to academia

iDEM strengthens its commitment to inclusive digital innovation through the publication of research in specialised journals on text simplification and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Beyond developing new technologies, iDEM actively contributes to the scientific literature, ensuring that its advances are accessible, reusable, and capable of inspiring new inclusive solutions.

iDEM’s accessibility tools

iDEM’s research has resulted in two main tools. Using artificial intelligence and Natural Language Processing (NLP), the iDEM tools democratize knowledge by making information more understandable and accessible.
